Want to change a child’s life? Become a Big today!
Our Mission:
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Upper Ohio Valley strives to make positive differences in the lives of children and youth, primarily through a professionally-supported One-to-One relationship with a caring adult, and to assist them in achieving their highest potential as they grow to become confident, competent, and caring individuals by providing committed volunteers, leadership, and standards of excellence.
Our Major Program Services and Objectives:
Traditional One-to-One program- Matches are made between youth and carefully screened adult volunteers who meet as their schedule allows, at least once every other week, with a phone call on the corresponding weeks. The adult and child determine what times work for them. Activities include tutoring, outings to local events, reading, board games or simple conversation.
Faith Based Program- The purpose of this program is to match at-risk youth with carefully screened adult volunteers from local churches in order to mentor children by providing them with an opportunity to serve others. This is accomplished through a once-a-week site based meeting in which the mentor and child work on service projects and activites to be donated to others. Examples of such projects are lap blankets for local nursing homes, kniting baby hats for newborns in local hospitals, and helping at local soup kitchens.
Children of Incarcerated Parents Program- This program is tailored to the unique needs and situations faced by children who have one or both parents serving time in the federal prison system. Volunteers are trained to respond to the concerns and issues that are often presented during the match.
